Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio became as messy during matches as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio during this campaign. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.

He joined in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
