Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
